The Super RegulatorSo we want the best DC power supply we can create, but we are also lazy and like to keep things as simple as practicable - what do we do? Well a browse around the web, and a few choice emails to the right people elicited the original Walt Jung articles written for 'The Audio Amateur'. Walt was ably assisted in this venture by Jan Didden, and Gary Galo, who contributed a PCB layout / significant implementation advice and Real-World implementation and sonic evaluations, respectively. These articles were probably ground-breaking at the time, although the full impact of the articles is only just being realised, with many manufacturers starting to implement PSU's that are much closer to the 'perfect' supply. I put off building these supplies for some time, since the original choice of error amplifier (an AD797) was very expensive. Add this to the cost of the significant number of high quality capacitors required and the design started to look expensive, especially as I wanted to use a number of them. The results with POOGE and Sulzer though meant that audiophilia nervosa took over, and the next six months of what little spare time I had became occupied by designing PCB's and then sonic evaluations of the results. Want to know more about this path to audio nirvana, and occasional frustration?
